In most cases, enlarged hand veins are normal veins that become more visible as the skin relaxes and thins with age. They are not considered to be diseased as are protruding varicose veins in the legs. They can however be easily injured and unsightly as the skin becomes more fragile.
Typically, these veins do not cause pain and are usually treated for cosmetic reasons alone. It is widely known that a glance at a person’s hands can quickly reveal their true age. Hand vein therapy offers a fast, simple, and virtually painless way to have younger looking hands. Results are dramatic and long lasting.
Injecting hand veins is similar to injecting veins in the leg. Both are performed in our office by our physician, Dr. Kimberly Moskowitz. Only FDA approved medications with a long record of safety are used and the procedure is virtually painless. You will be required to wear a compression bandage or compression gloves for up to 24 hours. All other normal activities are resumed immediately.
In both the legs and hands, there are two main venous systems; the deep vein system and the superficial vein system. Many of the veins of the superficial vein system (those that are close to the surface) are not essential for proper return of blood to the heart. When these veins are closed down, blood is diverted to normal healthy deep veins easily.
Mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness is sometimes present for a few days after treatment, but there are no significant risks with hand vein treatments.
While insurance often covers treatment of symptomatic leg veins, hand vein treatments are always considered cosmetic and will never be covered by insurance.
